Handmade dolls, known as “reborn babies,” are sparking controversy all over the land because some of their buyers are bereaved parents, looking to feel something of what they lost.
“Reborn babies” are created from vinyl, mohair, and multiple layers of paint that convey the look of a newborn’s mottled skin. The makers have weighted the “babies” to feel like actual infants, and added electronic devices to simulate breathing and chest movement.
But with “reborn babies,” the true-to-life look and feel of the dolls opens the door for uses that some find questionable.
One mother of two told Reuters, “My daughter wanted a sibling and I didn’t want to have any more children, so I made her a doll instead.”
